Typical functions include overvoltage protection, overcurrent protection, short-circuit protection, and thermal shutdown. These mechanisms help protect both the converter and the connected load from abnormal conditions. Isolation is another key aspect in many designs. Using a transformer provides galvanic isolation between the mains and the output, improving safety and allowing different output voltage levels.Efficiency is a critical performance metric. Losses occur in semiconductors, magnetic components, and passive elements. Designers aim to minimize conduction and switching losses by selecting appropriate devices, topologies, and control methods. High-efficiency designs reduce heat generation, improve reliability, and lower energy consumption.AC-DC converters are found in consumer electronics, telecommunications, computing, industrial automation, lighting, and renewable energy systems. They may be implemented as open-frame power modules, enclosed power supplies, adapters, or integrated on circuit boards.
